In a landmark move, the Assam Legislative Assembly on Tuesday passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma describing the legislation as a major step towards protecting women’s dignity and rights. With the passage of the Bill, Assam has become the third State, after Uttarakhand and Gujarat, to pass the UCC framework. The bill aims to establish a common set of laws governing marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships irrespective of religion, gender, or community. During the debate, the government stated that the UCC will ensure equality, simplify legal processes, and strengthen national integration.
