Legendary playback singer S. Janaki, fondly known as the “Nightingale of South India”, passed away in Mysuru at the age of 88. With a career spanning over six decades, Janaki lent her voice to songs in multiple Indian languages including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and Odia. Popularly called Janaki Amma, the legendary singer recorded more than 50 Odia songs and was a familiar voice to Odia music lovers. Some of her Odia tracks remain evergreen hits among fans. For her contribution to Odia cinema, S. Janaki was honored with the Odisha State Film Award in 1986. Tributes have been pouring in from across the country for the veteran singer, who was celebrated for her versatility, range and emotional depth.
