Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has urged Union External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to intervene in the matter of ISKCON holding “untimely” Ratha Jatra celebrations abroad, stating that it is hurting the sentiments of crores of devotees. In X to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Pattnaik pointed out that both Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb and the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) already appealed ISKCON to conduct the Ratha Jatra and Snana Jatra as per the traditional Hindu calendar and rituals. However, he alleged that ISKCON is not adhering to the appeal. Pattnaik requested the Ministry to direct Indian Embassies in countries where ISKCON is planning the Ratha Jatra to counsel the organisation. He urged ISKCON to celebrate the festival as per the tithi to maintain the sanctity and tradition of Lord Jagannath. The controversy comes amid ISKCON temples in several countries organizing Ratha Jatras on dates that do not coincide with the official schedule in Puri.
