Eight students drowned in the sea at Diveagar Beach in Maharashtra’s Raigad district today while on a picnic. The students, from Class XI and XII, were part of a group from Winners Academy in Alandi, Pune.

The group had 48 members, including 25 boys, 17 girls and six teachers. The students entered the sea but were swept away after misjudging the water depth and current.

Search and rescue teams, along with local residents, recovered all eight students and took them to the primary health centre at Borli, where they were declared dead. Police and local authorities are conducting further proceedings.
