Sujata Karthikeyan’s Entry Gives BJD a New Face Amid Rebuilding Phase
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) received a significant boost with the formal induction of former IAS officer Sujata Rout Karthikeyan, a move that is expected to reshape political discussions within Odisha and the party itself.

Welcoming Sujata Rout Karthikeyan into the Biju Janata Dal, BJD President Naveen Patnaik said she would function as an ordinary party worker despite her distinguished administrative career.

“I welcome Sujata Rout to the Biju Janata Dal. She will work as a simple member of the party. During her tenure as an IAS officer, she served in various capacities and carried out her responsibilities with dedication and commitment,” Naveen said.

Putting an end to speculation over succession within the party, Naveen Patnaik asserted, “I will be leading the BJD in the next election.”

After formally joining the party, Sujata Rout Karthikeyan said she would continue to serve the people of Odisha with sincerity and dedication. Seeking the blessings of Mahaprabhu Jagannath and the support of lakhs of BJD workers and the people of the state, she pledged to work for Odisha’s development and welfare.

She also expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Naveen Patnaik for placing his trust and confidence in her and giving her an opportunity to serve through the party platform.

Her entry comes at a crucial juncture when the BJD is striving to regain momentum after its electoral setback in 2024. Party leaders believe Sujata’s administrative experience, clean image and understanding of governance can help strengthen the organisation as it transitions from a ruling party to an effective opposition.

A highly regarded bureaucrat, Sujata served in several important capacities during her career and was associated with the implementation of key welfare and development programmes. Her work in the fields of education, women’s empowerment and social development earned her recognition across administrative circles.

Beyond her bureaucratic credentials, Sujata is widely known as the spouse of former IAS officer V.K. Pandian, one of the most influential figures in the previous BJD government. However, party insiders insist that her political journey will be assessed on her own merit, experience and public outreach.

Her induction is also being viewed as part of the BJD’s broader strategy to bring experienced professionals and women leaders into active politics. The move is expected to strengthen the party’s engagement with youth, women and urban voters.

While political opponents are likely to question the development, BJD leaders have welcomed her entry, describing it as an addition of proven administrative talent to the party’s ranks. As Odisha’s political landscape evolves, all eyes will now be on the role Sujata Karthikeyan chooses to play in shaping the BJD’s future.
