Novo Nordisk has launched ‘Awiqli’, world’s first once-weekly basal insulin for adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus in India, offering a major shift in how diabetes is managed. It will be available in India from July 10, 2026. Instead of daily injections, patients will now need just one injection a week — reducing the number of insulin administrations from 365 times a year to 52 times. Vikrant Shrotriya, Managing Director, Novo Nordisk India, said the launch brings a global innovation to India with India-specific pricing to ensure wider access. Awiqli will be priced at Rs 2,611 for a 700-unit pen. That works out to Rs 3.73 per unit. For comparison, most current insulin pens contain 300 units. Shrotriya noted the pricing is far lower than currently available new-generation analogues to make it very accessible. Awiqli is indicated for adults above 18 years with Type 2 diabetes and can also be used as a starting basal insulin for Type 1 diabetes patients above 18 years.
