Harmanpreet Kaur Steps Down as Captain of Indian Women’s Cricket Team

Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as Captain of the Indian Women’s Cricket team across all formats, bringing an end to a decade-long leadership.

In an emotional statement, Kaur said the decision was not easy and reflected on the memories, sacrifices and challenges she experienced while leading the national side.

Her decision came after a BCCI review meeting in Guwahati to assess the team’s performance and progress over the past few months.

The 37-year-old took charge of India’s T20I side in 2016 and became the full-time captain across ODIs and Tests in 2022 following Mithali Raj’s retirement from international cricket.

During her tenure, Harmanpreet captained India in 5 Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is. Her final assignment as captain ended with India securing a second consecutive Gold medal at the Asian Games, following their Gold-medal triumphs in 2022 and 2026.

Harmanpreet’s leadership era also included a historic achievement as she became only the third Indian captain, after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni, to lead the country to a 50-over World Cup title.
