A shocking incident in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district has once again highlighted the growing dangers faced by RTI activists and whistleblowers in India. RTI activist and social worker Priyabrata Gadnayak was brutally attacked by unidentified assailants near Mahishapat Chowk on NH-55 while returning home. The incident has triggered widespread outrage across political and civil society circles. According to reports, the attackers intercepted Gadnayak’s vehicle, smashed the windows, dragged him out onto the road, and assaulted him with sharp weapons, including swords. He sustained severe injuries to his face, hands, and legs and was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in critical condition. Gadnayak alleged that the attack appeared to be politically motivated and claimed he could identify some of the attackers. The incident has sparked serious concerns over the safety of RTI activists who often expose corruption, irregularities, and abuse of power. Across India, many activists working under the Right to Information framework have faced threats, harassment, and violent attacks for demanding transparency and accountability. Political leaders and activists have strongly condemned the assault, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and stronger protection mechanisms for whistleblowers. The attack not only reflects a disturbing collapse of law and order but also sends a chilling message to citizens who dare to question powerful interests. A democracy can survive only when truth-seekers feel safe. If RTI activists are silenced through fear and violence, transparency itself becomes the victim. The Odisha government and law enforcement agencies must ensure swift justice and guarantee protection for those fighting corruption in public interest.
