Canadian author Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature. Carson, 76, has produced a distinctive body of work that moves across poetry, prose, translation and classical studies. Her writing frequently draws inspiration from Greek mythology, ancient texts and classical literature, blending these influences with innovative literary forms. Among her notable works from the 1990s is “The Glass Essay,” published in Glass, Irony, and God in 1995. The work is recognised for demonstrating the possibilities of the long poem, particularly by blurring traditional boundaries between literary genres. Through her experimental approach and engagement with classical traditions, Carson has developed a distinctive literary voice that connects ancient texts with contemporary forms of expression. Her 2026 Nobel Prize recognises her contribution to expanding the possibilities of modern literature.
