Odisha Govt orders Safety Audit of Seafood Processing Units after Tamil Nadu Incident
Following the deadly ammonia gas leak at a private seafood export and processing facility in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district, the Odisha Government has launched a statewide safety review of seafood processing factories handling the hazardous refrigerant. The move comes amid concerns that similar units operating in Odisha could face comparable risks if adequate safety protocols are not strictly enforced.

The Directorate of Factories and Boilers, Odisha, has instructed Deputy Directors and Assistant Directors of Factories and Boilers to conduct spot inspections of seafood processing factories where ammonia is handled. The inspections will be carried out by teams comprising at least two officers to assess the existing safety systems and identify additional measures required to prevent similar incidents.

Concerned over the potential risks in Odisha’s seafood processing industry, the state authorities have asked officials to submit detailed reports on each factory within a week, outlining current safety arrangements and recommending further safeguards with specified timelines for implementation.

The Directorate has also asked field officers to identify any additional factories within their jurisdictions where ammonia gas is being used and report the details for further action. The order has been marked as urgent and a copy has been forwarded to the Labour and ESI Department for necessary follow-up.
