ICC revamps ODI and T20 World Cup formats, introduces Super 7 and Super 10
The International Cricket Council made a slight change to the formats of 2027 ODI World Cup and 2028 T20 World Cup. ICC added Super 7 stage at ODI World Cup and Super 10 instead of Super 8 at T20 World Cup to give more opportunities to emerging nations and add more competitive edge to the tournament.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will continue to be a 20-team event in the 2028 edition, which is to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Under the proposed structure, the 20 participating teams will no longer be divided into 4 groups. Instead, they will be split into 5 groups.

20 teams will be divided into 5 groups. The top 2 teams from each group will qualify for the next round. The 10 qualified teams will then be placed into 2 groups of 5 teams each in the ‘Super-10’ stage.

The top team from each Super-10 group will directly qualify for the semi-finals. The 2nd-placed team from each group will play an ‘Eliminator’ match against the 3rd-placed team from the other group.

Eliminators to Semis: The winners of the 2 Eliminator matches will progress to join the group toppers in the semi-finals.

ICC has revised the tournament structure by introducing a Super Series and Super 7 stage. The Super Series will be played between three teams and one of them will progress to round two of the competition that will see six teams divided into two groups.
