In a major push for Odisha’s industrial growth, National Aluminium Company Ltd (Nalco) and NLC India Ltd (NLCIL) have joined hands to build a 1,080 MW captive thermal power plant in Anugola. The two central PSUs have signed a Joint Venture-cum-Shareholders’ Agreement to set up a 50:50 JV. The new plant will have 4 units of 270 MW each and will come up inside Nalco’s existing captive power complex at Angul.The project is directly linked to Nalco’s big expansion plans. The company is adding 0.5 million tonnes per annum capacity to its aluminium smelter at Anugola, which is slated to be operational by 2030-31. To meet the additional power demand, this captive plant has been planned.Valued at around Rs 12,000 crore, the power project is a key part of Nalco’s overall Rs 30,000 crore expansion programme in Odisha. Officials said the JV will help ensure uninterrupted and cost-effective power supply for Nalco’s smelter expansion, while also strengthening the state’s power and industrial infrastructure. The pact signed in New Delhi in the presence of G Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Coal and Mines, Sanoj Kumar Jha, additional secretary of Ministry of Coal and in-charge CMD of NLCIL and Brijendra Pratap Singh, CMD of Nalco.
