Indian-origin jurist Navanethem Navi Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. She previously served as president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee received 287 nominations for this year’s award, with slightly more than one-fourth being organisations. Potential contenders included the International Space Station, emergency teams in Sudan, children’s rights advocates in Ukraine and two major international courts. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also drew attention in prediction markets. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that he deserves the prize and has expressed his desire to win it.

In 2025, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to establish democracy in Venezuela. She later gave her Nobel medal to Trump after the United States removed then-President Nicolás Maduro from power. However, the Nobel Committee clarified that the award cannot be transferred to another person.
