The Supreme Court has decided to constitute a high-powered committee to investigate allegations of violence and police excesses during the recent CJP-led protests. The decision was taken by a three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The panel will examine allegations of excessive use of force by the police as well as instances of violence against police personnel during the protests. It will also look into complaints raised by women protesters, including allegations of sexual harassment and online abuse. The proposed committee is expected to include a former Supreme Court judge, a former Chief Justice of a High Court, a former Director General of Police and a former CBI chief. The Supreme Court has also indicated that video footage and CCTV recordings of the violence during the July 20 Parliament march in Delhi will be made available to the committee for examination. After the panel submits its report, the Supreme Court will consider the findings and issue further directions as necessary.
