Paradip Port Designated as Mega Port, Becomes Only Such Port on India’s East Coast

Paradip Port in Jagatsinghpur district has been officially designated as a “Mega Port” by the Centre, marking a significant milestone for Odisha’s maritime sector. With this recognition under the Indian Ports Act, 2025, Paradip has become the only port on India’s eastern coast to receive the Mega Port designation.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has issued a notification designating Paradip Port along with Deendayal Port (Kandla), Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) and Mundra Port as “Mega Ports” after evaluating them against prescribed performance benchmarks.

The recognition of Paradip as a Mega Port reflects its expanding capacity, robust infrastructure and operational strength. It is also expected to further strengthen Odisha’s position in India’s maritime economy by enhancing trade, logistics, connectivity and industrial development.

With Paradip emerging as the only Mega Port on the eastern coast, the port is set to play an increasingly important role as a major gateway for trade and industry. The distinction is expected to boost Odisha’s potential to attract investments, strengthen its logistics network and create new economic opportunities.

As Odisha aims to emerge as a leading hub for trade, industry and maritime growth, Paradip Port is expected to contribute significantly to the State’s economic transformation and the broader vision of a Viksit Bharat.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his leadership and to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for the recognition accorded to Paradip Port. He described the development as a proud moment for Odisha and an important milestone in the State’s journey of progress.
