Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has once again put the issue of illegal infiltration at the centre of Bengal politics with his strong “jaldi bhaago” warning directed at undocumented migrants allegedly living in the state. Speaking at a government-backed public programme, Adhikari said his administration had already begun identifying illegal infiltrators and would intensify verification drives across border districts. He asserted that Bengal “will no longer remain a safe shelter for illegal entrants” and warned that strict legal action, including deportation, would follow against those found staying without valid documents. The Chief Minister claimed years of unchecked infiltration had put pressure on public resources, altered demographic patterns, and created security concerns in several districts bordering Bangladesh. He also accused previous governments of remaining silent on the issue for political convenience. The remarks immediately triggered political backlash. Opposition parties accused Adhikari of attempting to create fear and communal polarisation through aggressive rhetoric. Several civil society organisations also expressed concern over the language used by the Chief Minister, urging the government to ensure that any action remains within constitutional and humanitarian limits. Despite the criticism, BJP leaders defended Adhikari’s stand, saying the government was merely enforcing the law and protecting national interests. With border security and citizenship now becoming dominant themes in Bengal politics, Adhikari’s remarks are expected to further sharpen political divisions across the state.
