In view of heavy rainfall associated with a developing depression over the Bay of Bengal, schools and colleges have been declared closed in several districts of Odisha. Educational institutions in Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Balangir and Koraput will remain closed on September 23 and 24. However, teachers and other staff have been directed to remain present at their respective schools. The district administrations of Khordha and Kalahandi have also ordered the closure of all government, government-aided and private schools on September 23. The depression over the Bay of Bengal is gradually intensifying, with the possibility of crossing the coast between north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha during the night of September 23 and the early hours of September 24. Heavy rainfall has already begun in southern and coastal Odisha ahead of the anticipated weather system. As a precautionary measure, red flags have been placed along Puri beach, and restrictions have been imposed on sea bathing. Visitors and tourists have been advised to stay away from the sea and follow the instructions of lifeguards and local authorities.
