Gujarat has taken a significant step towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), becoming the second State in India after Uttarakhand to pass legislation for a common civil code. The Gujarat Legislative Assembly which passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill in March 2026 following an extensive debate, has received the President Droupadi Murmu’s assent, paving the way for the legislation to come into force in the State. The Gujarat Government issued a Gazette notification following the approval. The legislation proposes a common legal framework covering matters such as marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships, irrespective of religion. One of the key provisions of the new law concerns inheritance and property rights. The UCC provides equal inheritance rights to sons and daughters, while women are to receive the same legal rights as men in matters involving property and succession. The development places Gujarat alongside Uttarakhand, which became the first state to bring a Uniform Civil Code into force in January 2025.
