A deep depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal moved westwards at a speed of 12 kmph during the past six hours, according to the latest weather update issued at 5:30 AM IST on September 23, 2026. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in southern Odisha under its influence. The system was centred near latitude 18.0°N and longitude 84.7°E, approximately 70 km east-southeast of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 150 km south of Gopalpur (Odisha), 150 km east-northeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), and 230 km south-southwest of Puri (Odisha). The deep depression is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the North Andhra Pradesh–South Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to Kalingapatnam, by the night of September 23, 2026, while retaining its intensity as a deep depression. A total of 33 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) teams have been deployed to ensure a swift response to possible rain-related emergencies in the state. Of these, 24 teams have been stationed in vulnerable districts, while an additional nine teams have been kept in reserve at Chhatrapur. District-wise deployment includes six teams each in Ganjam and Koraput, three teams each in Gajapati, Malkangiri and Rayagada, two teams in Kalahandi, and one team in Balangir.
