The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has secured a major legal victory after the Central Information Commission (CIC) ruled that it is not a “public authority” and therefore not covered under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. In an important directive, the CIC overturned its own 2018 order that had brought the BCCI under the RTI ambit. The Commission noted that the BCCI functions independently and is not subject to government interference. The CIC also observed that the Indian cricket board is financially self-sufficient and does not depend on government funding. Earlier, the matter was sent back to the CIC after the Madras High Court, in September 2025, asked it to reconsider the issue in light of the Supreme Court observations.
