A suspected plague case in Russia’s Siberian Irkutsk region has triggered heightened health precautions after a 28-year-old laboratory researcher at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute died following a severe respiratory illness. Reports said the woman may have accidentally broken a test tube containing live bacteria while collecting samples for testing. Reports also said Shipilova had travelled to an area near the Mongolia border before becoming seriously ill. She was hospitalized in Shelekhov with severe pneumonia and later died despite being placed on ventilator support. Nearly 200 people who may have come into contact with her have been placed under medical observation and quarantine. Officials have said that those under observation have shown no signs of illness and that initial laboratory tests have been negative. The incident has sparked concern over a possible pneumonic plague outbreak, although officials continue to investigate the exact cause of the researcher’s death and have urged people to remain calm.
