Seven pyres were lit together at Puri’s Swargadwar, where the last rites of the son, two daughters, son-in-law and three grandchildren of Banamali Behera were performed. The mortal remains reached Bhubaneswar late last night from Madhya Pradesh in special ambulances. In the presence of administrative officials from Madhya Pradesh, the bodies and recovered belongings were handed over to the family members. An atmosphere of grief prevailed as the mortal remains arrived at the family’s residence in Jayadev Vihar. Later, relatives, friends and well-wishers gathered at the family’s ancestral home in Gadakana to pay their final respects. The bodies were subsequently taken to Puri’s Swargadwar, where the last rites were performed. The state government had made extensive arrangements to facilitate the process.
