A court in New Mexico has ordered tech giant Meta to pay $567 million USD in penalties after finding the company responsible for harming the mental health of children. The lawsuit alleged that Meta’s social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, were designed in ways that negatively impacted children’s psychological well-being. The New Mexico court ruled that the company failed to implement adequate safeguards to protect minors from harmful content, addictive features, and online exploitation. As per the court’s directive, Meta must pay the $567 million fine. T The judgment also pressures the company to make changes to its platform design and safety policies for users under 18. This is one of the largest fines imposed on a social media company in the U.S. related to child safety. Officials in New Mexico said the ruling sends a clear message that tech companies must be held accountable for the impact of their products on young users.
