Kharavela’s Legacy: Committee Proposes Massive Statue and ₹100-Crore Overhaul for Khandagiri-Udayagiri

The historic twin hills of Khandagiri and Udayagiri may soon undergo a monumental transformation to honor the reign of the great King Maha Megha Airya Kharavela. The Departmentally Related Standing Committee-III has formally recommended that the site be developed as a “complete tourist pride,” proposing a grand statue of the Kalinga Emperor Kharavela as a centerpiece of the project.

The ambitious blueprint suggests a budget of approximately 100 Crores to fund a series of high-end upgrades. Proposed features include a musical fountain, a walking park extending from the ground to the hilltop, and a modern lighting system. To improve the visitor experience, the committee has also suggested constructing an amphi-theatre, an interpretation centre, and a permanent entrance gate. Additionally, the proposal highlights a critical need for inclusivity, recommending the installation of ramps or lift facilities to assist senior citizens and physically challenged tourists.

While the vision for the twin hills is comprehensive, the project currently remains in the recommendation phase. The Tourism Department has officially requested an Action Taken Report from its various sections to assess the feasibility of these works, which may involve land acquisition and coordination with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The department is expected to evaluate these suggestions and take a final call by May 31, 2026, before submitting its response to the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
