The Indonesian Government has written to the Indian authorities seeking the repatriation of five baby orangutans rescued from Baleshwar in Odisha. The five orangutans are currently being cared for at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar. In a letter to the Indian CITES authorities, Indonesia’s forestry department appealed for the animals to be returned to Indonesia if genetic or sample testing confirms that they are of Indonesian origin. The Indonesian authorities have also expressed their readiness to extend cooperation and coordinate with India in the process of identifying and repatriating the orangutans. Further action is expected after the completion of the necessary tests and verification of their origin.
