IMD predicts below-normal Monsoon in 2026
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a below-normal southwest monsoon for 2026, projecting rainfall at 92% of the long-period average (LPA).

The IMD held a press conference on the Southwest Monsoon. Addressing the press meet, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said rainfall from June to September this year is likely to be below normal.

While rainfall in June is expected to be 92% below normal, the Central India is likely to see 94% less rainfall than normal. During the Southwest Monsoon season of June to September 2026, Northeast India is likely to receive normal rainfall, ranging between 94 and 106% of the Long Period Average. Odisha is also expected to receive below-normal rainfall.

Changes are currently being observed in El Niño (cooling of the Pacific Ocean) conditions. During June 2026, the number of ‘heatwave days’, or days of extreme heat is projected to be higher than normal in many parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh, as well as in specific pockets of Maharashtra, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

The DG added that the monsoon has already touched the Andaman Islands on the 16th.
