PCI Clarifies: UPI Payments to Remain Free for Customers
The Payments Council of India (PCI) has issued a clarification amid reports about a possible charge on UPI transactions, stating that UPI will continue to remain free for customers.

In an official statement, PCI said, “No charges will be levied on customers or small merchants for UPI payments.”

UPI has always been free for consumers since its launch in 2016. Every Indian can continue making instant digital payments without paying any transaction charges, PCI stated.

Small merchants are not required to pay any charges (MDR) to accept UPI payments. UPI was designed to make digital payments accessible for even the smallest businesses across India, and protecting small merchants remains central to the ecosystem’s inclusive growth.

The clarification comes after speculation that digital payments could attract a fee.

The statement aims to reassure millions of UPI users that the platform will remain free and accessible for everyday transactions.
