J&K Assembly Passes Statehood Resolution; BJP Walks Out

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a resolution seeking the urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The resolution was moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during the ongoing Assembly session.

The resolution called upon the Government of India to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest and forward the resolution to the Centre. It also referred to earlier resolutions passed by the Assembly in 2000 and 2024.

The move triggered strong objections from BJP legislators, who opposed references to the erstwhile state’s autonomy and pre-August 5, 2019 status. BJP members staged a protest and walked out of the House amid heated exchanges.

Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh—following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. The region has remained a Union Territory since then.
