A horrific fire broke out in a moving sleeper bus on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, in the early hours of Thursday, leaving nine passengers dead, police confirmed. Several other passengers were reportedly injured in the incident. The fire broke out in the Jewar police station area of the Yamuna Expressway when the bus was travelling from Delhi to Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh. The bus was reportedly carrying around 40–50 passengers, although the exact number of people on board has not yet been confirmed. Most of the passengers were asleep when the fire broke out. According to one survivor, someone woke him up after noticing the fire. By the time he got up, the bus had filled with smoke. He said the fire had started in the front portion of the bus and that he managed to escape. Panic spread among the passengers as the flames rapidly engulfed the vehicle. While some passengers managed to get out and save themselves, others were trapped inside as the fire spread quickly. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Police and fire service personnel reached the spot and brought the blaze under control. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the deaths and condoled the loss of lives. He also announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 each for those injured in the accident.
