The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed Ravindra Pal alias Dara Singh to amend his remission petition after the Odisha Government rejected his plea. The Apex Court took on record the Odisha Government’s decision rejecting the remission plea of Ravindra Pal Singh alias Dara Singh, who is serving a life sentence in connection with the 1999 killing of Australian missionary Graham Stuart Staines and his two minor sons. Singh, 63, has been in jail for more than 25 years. A bench comprising Justice Manoj Misra and Justice Vijay Bishnoi was informed about the state government’s decision and directed that the order be formally placed on record, with a copy supplied to Singh’s counsel. The court also permitted Singh to amend his petition in light of the fresh order and granted him two weeks to file an appropriate application challenging the state government’s decision. The matter will be listed again after three weeks. Singh was convicted for his role in the killing of Graham Staines and his sons, Philip, 10, and Timothy, 6. The three were burnt alive while sleeping inside their station wagon at Manoharpur village in Odisha’s Kendujhar district in January 1999. Singh, the main accused in the triple murder, was convicted and sentenced to death by a CBI court in 2003. He approached the top court in 2024 seeking release on the ground that he had served over 24 years in jail.
