Historic Day: Suvendu Adhikari sworn in as first BJP CM of West Bengal since Independence
In a historic day for West Bengal politics, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of the State since Independence.
 
Administered by the Governor of West Bengal, RN Ravi, Adhikari’s oath marks the end of decades of non-BJP rule in the State and signals a major political shift.
 
BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu, Nitish Pramanik also took oath as Cabinet Ministers.
 
The grand swearing-in ceremony was held at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Ground, witnessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior NDA leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini, thousands of supporters and senior national leaders.
 
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Adhikari vowed to usher in a new era of development, good governance, and public welfare. He emphasized his commitment to restoring law and order, ensuring women’s safety, and accelerating industrial growth to create jobs for the youth. With this victory, the BJP has formed its first Government in West Bengal, ending the state’s long wait for a change in leadership.
 
Adhikari was elected as the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Nandigram in 2016, 2021 and currently from Bhabanipur since 2026. Previously he was elected from Kanthi Dakshin in 2005, and Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamluk in 2009, and 2014.
 
Previously he also served as the Minister of Transport from 2016 to 2020, Irrigation and Water resource from 2018 to 2020 in the Government of West Bengal.
