No Cyclone Threat, Deep Depression to Intensify, Heavy Rain Likely in Southern Odisha: IMD DG

A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression by September 22, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of Odisha, particularly the southern districts.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, rainfall is expected from September 22, with around 11 southern districts likely to be affected.

The system may move towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast by September 23. However, it is not expected to intensify into a cyclone.

Winds with speeds of 55–65 kmph may begin blowing from the evening of September 22, while extremely heavy rainfall is likely in some areas on September 23 and 24.

By September 25, rainfall activity is also expected to intensify over interior Odisha. Some areas could receive rainfall of up to 20 cm, raising concerns over potential flooding.

With heavy rainfall forecast, river water levels are likely to rise, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. The possibility of waterlogging and urban flooding also cannot be ruled out.

Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until September 24 in view of the anticipated adverse weather conditions.
