The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed Tamil Nadu Police to release DMK leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on station bail on the same day after questioning. The order came hours after Udhayanidhi was arrested over controversial remarks allegedly targeting actor Trisha. The case was registered against Udhayanidhi for a controversial comment he made at a public meeting on August 3 on the Cauvery water issue. During the hearing, Tamil Nadu Advocate General R. Vijay Narayan informed the High Court that Udhayanidhi had been taken to Thanjavur but would not be remanded to judicial custody. According to party sources, an anticipatory bail petition was filed immediately after police reached Udhayanidhi’s residence, however, he was arrested and taken to Thanjavur for questioning. The High Court directed the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly to cooperate with the investigation whenever required.
