The Government of West Bengal is reportedly planning to establish special “holding centres” to detain suspected illegal infiltrators and undocumented foreign nationals identified across the state. The move comes amid growing concerns over cross-border infiltration, particularly from Bangladesh, and is being projected by the government as part of a broader strategy to strengthen internal security and border management. According to officials, the proposed holding centres will temporarily house individuals identified during verification drives until their nationality and legal status are determined through due process. Sources indicate that the centres may be set up in districts close to the international border and other sensitive locations where illegal infiltration has long been a major political and security issue. The government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has maintained a tough stance on infiltration and illegal settlement in the state. Senior officials have argued that unchecked infiltration poses serious challenges to national security, demographic balance, and access to government welfare schemes. The proposal has already triggered sharp political reactions. Supporters of the move say stricter enforcement is necessary to curb illegal immigration and protect state resources. However, opposition parties and civil rights groups have raised concerns over possible harassment of genuine citizens, particularly minorities and migrant workers. Critics have also questioned the legal safeguards and transparency that would govern such holding centres. The issue of infiltration has remained one of the most politically sensitive topics in West Bengal politics for years, frequently dominating election campaigns and debates over citizenship, border security, and identity politics. Officials have clarified that the centres are intended only for those found staying illegally after verification and legal scrutiny. Detailed guidelines regarding the functioning, monitoring, and legal procedures of the holding centres are expected to be announced soon Post navigation Home Minister Amit Shah to visit Border areas, Review Security at BSF Posts
