RG Kar Case: Bengal Govt Acts Against Senior Police Officers

The West Bengal Government has taken disciplinary action against senior police officials in connection with the controversial RG Kar rape-murder case, a move seen as an attempt to contain mounting public outrage over the handling of the investigation.

Three senior IPS officers, including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, were suspended over alleged negligence and procedural lapses linked to the case. The action comes months after widespread protests by doctors, students and civil society groups demanding justice for the victim and accountability from the administration.

The RG Kar incident had shaken Bengal after allegations surfaced that crucial evidence was mishandled and the investigation was delayed during the initial phase. Questions were also raised over the conduct of sections of the police force and the administration’s response to the growing anger on the streets.

Political reactions intensified after the suspensions, with opposition parties claiming the action was delayed and taken only after sustained pressure from courts and the public. Meanwhile, the state government maintained that no one involved in lapses would be spared.

The case continues to remain under close judicial watch, while demands for institutional reforms and an impartial probe have grown louder across the state.
