In a major decision, the Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to increase the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed on Wednesday. At present, the Supreme Court has a total of 34 judges including the Chief Justice of India. The strength will now be increased to 38. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the move aims to strengthen the judiciary and improve access to justice. The proposal will now be placed before Parliament to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act. Once cleared by Parliament, the new positions will be filled through the collegium process. The strength of the Supreme Court of India was last increased from 30 to 33 by amending the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Act, 2019.
