With an aim to strengthen protection for road accident victims, the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed that all new private cars must have mandatory third-party insurance for 4 years and new two-wheelers for 6 years. The move is intended to improve compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act and ensure that victims of road accidents receive timely compensation. A bench of the apex court asked the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) to immediately issue necessary directions to all insurance companies to implement the new norms. The Supreme Court also asked IRDAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to develop a pilot project linking fuel supply at petrol pumps with valid insurance status.
