The Nepal Government is stepping up diplomatic efforts to engage with the international community following the devastating Bhotekoshi River floods that struck the country on August 26. Nepal has demanded climate compensation from the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters, arguing that countries highly vulnerable to climate change should receive financial support for the devastating impacts of extreme weather events. The catastrophic flash floods reportedly killed more than 1,200 people and left thousands missing, triggering renewed calls for international action on climate change and climate-related loss and damage. The disaster has caused massive damage to roads, bridges, buildings and hydropower projects, with thousands still out of contact. Foreign Affairs Minister Shisir Khanal said China, the United States and India, which he identified as among the world’s largest industrial emitters of carbon dioxide, have a historical responsibility to support countries such as Nepal that are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Nepal is expected to intensify its diplomatic outreach to major economies and international institutions to press for greater climate financing, disaster resilience and compensation for climate-related losses. The government has also emphasized the need for stronger international cooperation to help vulnerable nations prepare for increasingly frequent and severe climate-induced disasters.
