The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday started deliberations on sweeping policy reforms, like scrapping arrest powers of GST officers and easier registration, under GST 2.0, to ensure ease of doing business by following a trust-based taxation approach. ST Council has approved major structural reforms, including raising prosecution threshold to Rs 5 crore from 1 crore. The GST Council has approved simplified compliance norms for small sellers operating through e-commerce platforms. The 57th GST Council meeting made no changes to the existing GST rates, with the Finance Ministry stating that the GST rate structure is now settled. The participants included Chief Ministers of Delhi, Goa, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Meghalaya; Deputy Chief Ministers of Manipur and Telangana; the Finance Ministers and senior members of States/UTs, besides Secretary of Department of Revenue, Chairman and Members of CBIC and senior officials of the Ministry of Finance.
