Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 1 crore for the family of assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Harjeet Singh, accompanied by an additional 1 crore insurance payout from HDFC Bank, who was shot dead while performing his duty in Amritsar early on Friday.
 
ASI Harjit Singh, around 50 years old, was performing his duty in the Gate Hakima area of Amritsar at around 2:30 am on Friday when unidentified assailants targeted him and opened fire. He was shot three times.
 
The critically injured officer was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
 
Following the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced ₹1 crore in ex-gratia assistance for the bereaved family. An additional ₹1 crore insurance amount from a bank is also expected to be provided, taking the total financial assistance to ₹2 crore.
 
The motive behind the killing has not yet been established. Police have intensified their investigation to identify the attackers and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
