Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu opened India’s Gold medal account at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, winning her third Commonwealth Games Gold and delivering a moment of pride for the nation on Day 1 of competition. She lifted a Commonwealth Games record 85kg in the snatch before registering a Games record 105kg in the clean and jerk. She finished with a total lift of 190kg to claim the Gold medal. The victory marks her third Commonwealth Gold, adding to her titles from 2014 and 2018. India’s medal tally got another boost in weightlifting as Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi both secured Silver medals in their respective categories. Their performances ensured India had three weightlifting medals on the opening day itself.
