Mahanadi Tribunal’s Hirakud Dam Visit Costs Rs 1.45 Crore
The Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal’s recent visit to Hirakud Dam between February 26 and March 2, 2026 has incurred an expenditure of Rs 1.45 crore, raising fresh concerns over the mounting costs of the long-pending river water dispute. The expenditure includes event management, hotel stay and travels.

The expenditure has drawn attention amid growing frustration in Odisha over the lack of resolution. Despite crores being spent on Tribunal proceedings, hearings, and site visits, the core issue of ensuring Odisha’s rightful share of Mahanadi water during non-monsoon months remains unresolved.

The visit was aimed at assessing ground realities of water flow, reservoir levels, and the impact of upstream projects.

The Tribunal, constituted in 2018 to resolve the Mahanadi water sharing dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh, conducted a site inspection of the Hirakud Dam and its catchment areas.
