The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday approved the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 to increase the number of Supreme Court judges to 38 from 34 with a voice vote. The bill was moved in the Upper House by Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. Earlier, the Lok Sabha had passed the bill on Monday by voice vote. During the debate on the Bill, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Sasmit Patra urged the Centre to strengthen the Apex Court’s infrastructure.
